ATAL TUNNEL

Located at an altitude of 10,040 FT, Atal Tunnel gives a memorable experience to every traveller visiting from any part of the country or elsewhere in the world. It was inaugurated on 3rd October by our honourable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. At a length of 9.02 km it is the longest highway single-tube tunnel above 10,000 feet (3,048 m) in the world.

Why was it formed ?

This tunnel reduces the travel time and overall distance between Manali and Keylong on the way to Leh. The route, which formerly went through Gramphu, was 116 km (72.1 mi) long and took 5 to 6 hours in good conditions. A traveller now reaches the South Portal of the tunnel from Manali, a distance of 24.4 km (15.2 miles) in about 45 minutes, goes through the 9.02 km (5.6 miles) long tunnel in about 15 minutes, and reaches Keylong which is 37 km (23.0 miles) away in about 60 minutes. Thus, it was very helpful...

Best time for Visit -

Hmmm.....now the main question arises that which is the best time for visit to this
beautiful and unexpected sight.. Well, if you think that in summers you'll see less
snow at Atal tunnel or experience more snow in winters, then you are wrong.
Atal Tunnel is located at an altitude where the snow is visible throughout the year. Again the experience in Winter season is more recommended as with the snow you experience chilly-milly winds and more fascinating experience.. While suggesting
you the best time for visit, I'll again recommend you to visit the tunnel with a 4x4
Car as it offers you a safe journey and in some times of heavy snowfall the
restrictions are there for non 4x4 cars and are not allowed to visit the tunnel.
Thus I conclude that journey to Atal Tunnel is totally #engrossing....
